I don’t think there is anything wrong with showing off a little sometimes. If you know the answer in class, you should raise your hand.

If you get a promotion there’s not reason why you can’t announce it to the bar (after a few drinks) or your family and friends.

If you buy a new house, housewarming parties are a great way to show off.

If you buy a Porsche, driving it around smugly is sort of expected.

Then there are people who are just obnoxious show offs.

Obama is one of those.

Have you heard that Border Patrol is facing an ammunition shortage?

Yeah, that seemed as unbelievable to me as the news that the Department of Homeland security isplanning to stockpile over a billion rounds of ammunition, most of it in the form of hollow point rounds that arebanned in the theater of war…definitely not purchased for military use then.

Wait a minute…isn’t Border Patrol part of DHS? Yes, yes it is. So where is this “ammunition shortage” coming from?

New Article @ DS&P Magazine: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Agenda: Photo shoot, check.
Get a new movie script, check.
Donate a million dollars to charity and go build houses for refugees, check.

There is nothing that disgusts me more than actors, musicians, and writers who talk a big game about charity and helping people, but when push comes to shove they would much rather just raise the money from other people or ask the government to take care of the problem for them. *coughMattDamoncough*

But then there are people like Angelina Jolie.

Whatever you feel about her politics (she seems ambivalent on the topic of Obama, unlike most Hollywood stars, and she’s a registered Independent and not at all ashamed of it and her dad is Jon Voight so…) you have to admire a woman who puts her money where her mouth is in both her personal and professional life.

New Article @ DS&P Magazine: Who’s Your Daddy? Guess What? It’s Not the Government.

So I’m a lesbian and I’d like to get married one day, but the difference between me and the “marriage equality” kooks on the left (and a few on the right) is that I reject the idea that the government needs to be involved in that marriage at all and I would feel the same way if I was straight.

Here’s a question for conservatives who are in favor of gay marriage (or, in fact, in favor of the government being involved in marriage at all). Why do you need to government to validate your relationship?

I might have a tiny political crush on Rand Paul lately.

I didn’t agree with his decision on Hagel, but I appreciate his use of the nomination hearing to pry information out of a taciturn administration that refuses to be any more transparent than a lead wall.

As I’m typing this Rand has been talking for 10+ hours and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

New Article @ DS&P Magazine: Impotency in the Oval Office: Obama is Definitely Not Kirk

Okay, so the President today made a comment about how he couldn’t do a “Jedi mind meld” to get Congress to do what he thinks is right.

First of all, as an avid Trekkie, this is an unforgivable comment to make. If you are going to make sci-fi jokes in your speeches, make sure you get them right. Sci-fi nerds are notoriously easy to offend when you butcher quotes or references from our favorite shows, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the liberal sci-fi fans I know actually turn their backs on Obama after this.

But amidst all the really hilarious mocking that Obama is getting from this, there is something we are missing that is slightly more important.

New Article @ DS&P Magazine: It’s As Dangerous As Cheating on Lorena Bobbit

Going against the White House that is. Bob Woodward is learning that the hard way. Being an honest journalist in Washington DC these days is something that is frowned upon, when honesty means you make the President look bad.

Woodward has a long and glorious tradition of making President’s look foolish however, and I don’t think he cares what the White House or the rest of the media think of him telling the truth.

But is this behavior that should be coming from the “most transparent administration in history”, as Obama has claimed. Not only is this an administration that denies far more FOIA requests than Bush’s administration, but they also are beginning to have a tradition of harassing journalists who are trying to find the truth and report it, the way journalists are supposed to.

So much for “speaking truth to power”. I guess that only matters when a Republican is in office.

New Article @ DS&P Magazine: Not Unless You Buy Me Dinner First

I hate flying.

I mean, I really really hate flying. It’s a combination of the stress of making sure my carry on is the right size, checking that I’m not accidentally carrying any contraband, going through security, rushing to my gate, always feeling like I’m going to miss my connections, and the fact that I don’t trust the landing gear or engine to not crap out just when we need them.

If I had my way, I’d take the train everywhere.

It’s a problem for me, but I try to be calm and collected. I get everything packed days in advance, print out every conceivable piece of paper I could need ahead of time (and in triplicate), and get to the airport 2 or 3 hours before my flight. It’s still far more stressful than I would like though.

You know what doesn’t help? The TSA being power hungry idiots who wouldn’t know a terrorist if they walked up behind them, slapped them on the ass, and asked them to hold their belt of explosives for a minute.
