The saddest thing about this installment of this series is that it isn’t an immature college student freaking out about politics or religion, it’s a grown adult with a job (well she had a job…) and responsibilities and influence over the previously mentioned immature college students.
This installment of Grow The Fuck Up is brought to you by Associate Professor Mireille Miller-Young of the Feminist Studies Department of UC Santa Barbara.
Actually the previous two installments of this series make a lot of sense when you realize that people like this are allowed to teach college students.
The professor had loudly confronted 16-year-old Thrin Short and her 21-year-old sister, Joan, who were distributing pamphlets for the Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, a nonprofit pro-life group, on the school’s campus. Miller-Young ridiculed the girls, called them names, and then destroyed some of their group’s signage. Finally, she assaulted Thrin, causing her minor injuries.
Following the incident, Miller-Young claimed she had a “moral right” to physically attack the pro-life young people, stating that she viewed herself “like” a “conscientious objector.” The professor also blamed the young pro-lifers for forcing her to viciously attack them, claiming Thrin had “triggered” her.
Oh my lord.
If I could get away with assaulting people I disagreed with just because they “triggered” me with their beliefs, there would be a lot of bloody noses in my city.
Guess what, I can’t do that because I’m adult.
Actually I didn’t get to do that as a kid either. My kindergarten teacher was pretty strict on the whole “use your words, not your fists” thing. I guess someone was home stayed home that day when they were five.
This story is both more disturbing (because of her age and the sway she is given over young people’s minds) than the previous two stories I’ve dealt with in this series and less disturbing as it has a better ending than the previous two stories. As far as anyone knows the groups of mentally deranged and severely immature students who were covered previous, at UCLA and ASU, were not apprehended or punished in any way for their actions.
Miller-Young was sentenced to three years of probation, 108 hours of community service, 10 hours of anger management, and had to pay a fine of $500 to the girl she assaulted.
She still has a job apparently, which is insane, but at least she’s not teaching any classes this semester (though this might have to do with the fact that most of the classes she usually teaches aren’t even being offered this semester). Sometimes a refusal to grow up costs you, though this move should have cost her a lot more in my opinion.
I doubt she’s sorry for what she did, like most people who won’t grow the fuck up, she likely thinks she was in the right in the first place.
But Mirielle, if you act up more than a 5 year old on their first day of Kindergarten, I think we both know that you need to grow the fuck up.
